What really captures your attention for hours on end and makes novel such a page turner is it’s descriptions of the scale and severity of violence. This book is a snapshot of probably one of the very most violent episodes in human history; when one of the most ambitious men in the world, Hernán Cortés, with a technologically superior force of several hundred conquistadors took on an empire of possibly as many as 30 million Aztecs and ultimately prevailed.Cortes and Montezuma, the two most powerful men in the Northern hemisphere, who were simultaneously friends and geopolitical rivals presided over and in some cases carried out with their own hands utterly psychopathic violence and destruction. One of the themes of the fiction series is that there is a murderous demon stalking humanity behind the scenes of history demanding ever greater and bloodier human sacrifices. Priests, philosophers and conspiracy theorists disagree as to whether there is actually just such a demon or whether it’s merely an archetype for a dark recess of our evolutionary biology but we can’t deny it’s influence on the world.History was a factory operated by and producing traumatized human beings. There’s a book that I DO NOT recommend reading called The Origins of War in Child Abuse, which is quiet self explanatory and (hopefully) to you, self evident. The idea is that history has just been this nasty cycle of children being badly abused and then growing up participate in and start wars. You don’t have to look far back in your own lineage and familial history to find events where your own ancestors were subjected to genocide, warfare or large scale violence. It’s not so hyperbolic to say that the demon, the war god to whom Montezuma sacrificed so many virgins, still lurks in your own genes, waiting like Golem in that cave.Hollywood is notorious for producing gratuitously violent movies and supposedly a film about the Hernán and Montezuma is in pre-production but there’s no way it will really capture it. I’ve also watched a handful of the History channel or National Geographic documentaries on the period and they still don’t capture this historical epic that way these novels do, if it’s been a while since you were really enraptured by a book, checkout War God.

Night of Sorrows was the most violent, intricate, and cunning addition to the War God series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was full of twists, turns, drama, and real history that gives colour and life to this often generalized period of human history: The Spanish conquest of the Mexica Triple Alliance. Five Stars, Hancock. I look forward to a possible fourth book if Graham decides to write it.... the story does end quite abruptly with loose ends to tie up.I kept this vague as I don't want to spoil anything. Read the first two books first, and enjoy.

Presumably, anyone reading this review has read the first two volumes of War God, so the story will not be repeated here. Graham Hancock is a gifted writer who can spin an absorbing tale. My only beef with the third volume is that I want more! This was planned as a trilogy so I do not expect to see another volume, but there are too many loose ends left untied to totally satisfy my curiosity. What about Tozi and Guatemoc? Hummingbird/Saint Peter? What happened next after the night of sorrows?Since it is difficult or impossible to separate fact from fantasy in these volumes, researching the actual history would not tie all of these ends. I would have preferred a historical few pages at the end and a repeat of the glossary that was in earlier volumes. Unless Mr. Hancock sees fit to write some more words, these thing will just have to hang out there in my mind.

Again Mr. Hancock has delivered a gripping tale of a significant historical event. The descriptions of the city in a lake, more beautiful than Venice, and various points of view of the impending battle, lead the reader to understand the predicament of not only the Spanish invaders, but also of the greatly outnumbering Mexica people. Spanish jealousy and Mexica pride lead to a devastating war, one which the author cleverly portrays, leaving no detail from the resulting carnage. And the last chapter cleverly leaves the reader waiting for the next volume. A very interesting telling of history, although not for the squeamish.

Graham Hancock's 3rd volume of Cortes' first expedition into Tenochtitlan, the capture of Moctezuma, and his harrowing escape from the Mexica as they became determined to wipe out the Spaniards entirely, and failed, is an amazing tale of conflict between cultures who were simply not suited at that time to grapple with the challenge of trying to understanding each other. Graham's books have led me to read the history provided by Bernal Diaz Del Castillo, who was with Cortes throughout the campaign in Mexico, in his book The a true History of the Conquest of New Spain, as well as the 12 volumes of The Florentine Codex. Graham brings the history alive in this gripping narrative and makes the reader hungry for more of the tale. Highly recommended!

I was aware of the general timeline of events surrounding this period of history. Graham Hancock not only brought it vividly to life, but provided a thought provoking version of events and the relationship of Cortez and Moctezuma, and most importantly, the Palace Politics behind the demise of great Chieftain. I found the storyline fascinating, the visualization colorful, mystical, rich and compelling. As the final book in the 3 part odyssey, I found I couldn't put the book down. Someone should make it into a movie.
