Dumb: Living without a Voice is a truly unique graphic memoir. After losing her ability to speak, Georgia Webber must relearn how to communicate with the world around her. Watching how her life and relationships changed really makes you think about the role the speech plays in our lives. I couldn’t help but consider my relationship to my own voice, and what would happen if I were to mysteriously lose access to it for several months.The color palate for the artwork is entirely made up of black, white, and red, and has a sketchy, at times messy quality to it. I found this appealing for the most part, but there were a few times (especially near the end) that it became too nebulous and difficult to follow. Regardless, Dumb: Living Without a Voice is a thought-provoking work that I’d recommend to anyone with an interest in graphic memoirs.
