History books should be focused on factual history, and when it's revisionist history, the book quickly loses its value. Hourly History lost a great opportunity when an interesting subject like this was seriously manhandled.Omitting facts is just as bad as twisting them. In a short bit on Joan of Arc, the author does talk about the shenanigans perpetrated by the Church in an effort to have Joan incriminate herself. I found it lacking, though, because nowhere does the story mention that Joan had been captured by the enemy (England), who certainly had something to gain by discrediting her. Yet the author continues his beat-down of the Catholic Church.Throughout the book, the Church takes more beatings. I am not excusing those in the Church but the author on more than one occasion used the "million" number as if the Church used the Inquisition in all its various forms to kill that many people. There were certainly other factors involved over the centuries besides the Church protecting its territory. Finally, while comparing the different Inquisitions with today's world might be interesting, the "AHA!" luster wears off quickly when only America is used as the current face of today's "inquisition." Once again, Hourly History presents a slanted view of current events and past history, which is a strange habit to exhibit when part of your name is "History." Write political books and slam whoever you want to slam, but if you are going to write history books, please stick to the facts.
Normally I give a 5 to books in the Hourly History series, but this book is not up to the normal standards in composition, and has a large amount of ideological undertone. Unusual for Hourly History, there is liberal editorialization in the Conclusion, and I mean liberal in two senses of the word. The author is quick to condemn current Western ideology and activity, comparing the West to the Europe of several hundred years ago, a time when people lived in a different paradigm than we do today. This device is manipulative and deceptive. And the author completely (purposely) ignores the Inquisition of Islamic Supremacists going on in every country in Europe, the Middle East and increasingly in America, which is far more incongruous in our modern times than the Inquisition was in their times. Why?My advice to Hourly History is this: Stick to what your are best at doing, providing interesting reads of past history to educate the reader in a neutral environment, and let the reader analyse current situations according to his own political bent. Do not succumb to the liberal imperative to turn all educational platforms, media and other public avenues into tools to warp people's minds to a liberal ideology. This way you will not tarnish your reputation, and you will maintain the widest reader audience. And maybe do some good in the world.
(Kindle Location 49-58)...The greater the power, the greater the fear, and thus the Catholic Church had much to fear in a world that would struggle violently to wrest itself from the grasp of mighty Rome. The First Crusade brought back wealth beyond measure, and with that wealth came ideas. Those who left their homes and ventured into the east, returned changed. While taking the Holy Land of Jerusalem, these men were exposed to a great many ideas that challenged what the Church had told them. When these men returned, they brought with them these ideas and shared them with their brethren. In a short time, those who once answered the call of the Catholic Church without question began to question every aspect of the narrative the Church had given them. These same men were sometimes men of power and influence, who spread their ideologies like wildfire among the people. It became obvious that these heretics needed to be stamped out, or the Catholic Church would suffer a collapse from within, as did the ancient Roman Empire. The lesson of the fall of the Roman Empire was well learned by the Catholic Church. The very foundation on which the Church stood was the ruin of the ancient Roman Empire. They were no stranger to how hard one can fall when they have become too large for their support structures. If decay were to spread among the very smallest supports at the bottom and were allowed to reach the larger structures, then everything the Church had fought to gain would be undone. The Catholic Church needed a weapon to combat the rise in religious sectarianism, and that weapon would become the Inquisition...
I would say this book is between 4 and 5 stars, though I am not in 100% agreement with its contents. Even so, the book is decently written and as I was wrapping up I thought of a couple of historical quotes that frame the subject well as an answer to avoiding atrocities in the future. One man with a gun can control 100 without one. - Vladimir LeninAll that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund BurkeThat said, I believe evil can flourish no matter the age we live in, and Hitler is a great example of this. The bad that came from the Inquisition is that no telling how many innocent lives were lost! The good that resulted is the stranglehold the Catholic Church had on the world is largely gone and people can now be Christians without having to "marry" the Church and thank God, My Lord and Savior is not hanging on the Cross and I don't have to go through "Mary" to reach my God, only my intercessor in Jesus Christ!
