For vol 3 and vol 4: Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque take our American vampires into the 1930s and 1940s and thus into World War 2. Albuquerque handles an arc primarily focused on Skinner and Pearl in the Pacific, and the second story focuses on the Vassals of the Morning Star having their agents Cash McCogan and Felicia fight Nazi vampires on the European front with art by Sean Murphy.The arc focusing on Skinner and Pearl, called "Ghost War", features Albuquerque art, and, I like it less and less as we modernize. Henry, Pearl's man, is aging, but the art really doesn't do much with it. We are supposed to be invested in Henry and Pearl's love affair, but so far, Snyder just doesn't want to take the time to develop it out. Furthermore, Sweet still, despite its ambiguous morality and anti-hero status, is obnoxious: the deep anti-hero aimed at problematic teens. I was hoping either the comic would move away from him, or he would be made more complex, but so far neither has happened. The Vassals of the Morning Star's stake against the Vampires in Taipan is the most interesting development and does show the organization, and its mythology to promising. It is disturbing how the Japanese vampires are almost completely sub-human without faces--and I can't find a Japanese mythological reference to it. The tension between Skinner and Pearl is interesting, but for all the promises, this one frustrated me. It seemed like fanservice for people who a movie version of Pacific theatre in their mind.The "Survival of the Fittest" plotline, while given the Nazis more to do as protagonist and Synder making them more humane seems to cut against our current narrative edge--but when contrasted with the lack of humanity shown for the Japanese vampires, it is frustrating. Felicia Book, her instances on being called "Ms.," is a nice feminist touch that totally anachronistic. Not there weren't feminists in the 40s, but there was no Ms. That is a decade off. That said, Snyder does a good job of making Felecia one of the most interesting characters in the book. The glimpse of the first vampires and the issues with child vampires and the children of vampires complicate the narrative, but the Nazi stuff doesn't pay off.I am frustrated with this volume--it appeals to action junkies who want a little American gothic edge to their pulp, but it feels like something a teen would find to be mature storying, not actually mature storytelling. Given some of Snyder's Batman work, I know he is capable of that which makes a Vertigo title that gives him that freedom that doesn't live up to such expectations frustrating.

This is one of my favorite volumes in the American Vampire series, and it is largely due to the story centering around the teenaged vampire-killer Travis Kidd. He is a sleek, cool, badass who has embarked on a lifelong vendetta to kill as many vampires as he possibly can. Travis is also perpetually tracking the elusive Skinner Sweet--the daywalking vampire who killed his family when he was a young boy. This story was superbly written by Scott Snyder, and supremely illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque. I won't reveal too many spoilers, but the back and forth dialog between Sweet and Kidd was amazing--and the car chase culminating in the fistfight between them was phenomenally entertaining. My favorite part of the story was when Travis Kidd had to explain the concept of 'cool' to Skinner Sweet. Remember, we are in the 1950s in this story (as if Rafael Albuquerque's cover art wasn't a dead giveaway). I also liked the damsel-in-distress situation that was an important part of the 'Death Race' story. The damsel herself, Piper, was an enigmatic character and not at all what she seemed to be--as Travis seemed to instinctively know. Volume four of the American Vampire series was basically divided into two sections; the first half of the volume dealing with Skinner Sweet and James Book and their roles in the Indian Wars in the late nineteenth century, and the latter stories dealing with Travis Kidd and Vassal agent Calvin Poole in the 1950s. As we learned in previous installations of the American Vampire series, Skinner Sweet became a notorious gunslinging outlaw in the American Wild West before karma and a particularly nasty Carpathian vampire caught up with him. Sweet's morally upright stepbrother James Book took a very different career path and became a famous lawman. I liked the 'Beast in the Cave' story in the beginning of volume four mainly because we are given some of the background history on the tumultuous relationship between Book and Sweet as young boys. We learn of many reasons why the brothers were mutually antipathetic at a very young age. Simply put, Skinner Sweet was a psychopath before the term was ever invented, and this helps to explain why he became the terrifying vampire later in our story. The other tales in this volume were good, but pale in comparison with 'Death Race'. I agree with another reviewer who believes this particular volume of the series has a 'disjointed' feel to it. There is nothing wrong with going backward and forward in time while narrating several stories, but these tales didn't flow together very well. I've stated before that I am a fan of Scott Snyders writing and Rafael Albuquerques artistry. This series is outstanding primarily due to their stewardship and I hope we will see many more contributions from them in the future on this series. I almost want to say that their character Travis Kidd is compelling enough to have his own stand alone series. Unlike most teenagers, Travis is definitely a rebel WITH a cause. I like the notion of a teenaged vampire killer crisscrossing the country in the 1950s, rooting out vampire nests and other things that went 'bump in the night'. I cannot rate American Vampire highly enough as a series.

It would have taken an amazing book to top American Vampire Vol. 3 and, honestly, this book isn't amazing. But it is still really enjoyable.There are three main stories. The first, a flashback story with Skinner Sweet (pre-vamp) and James Book felt a bit contrived. I was surprised to see something that felt so much like a ret-con so early in the series. Honestly, I'd be happy if Snyder and co. never went back to the old west in the series if this is what is left to present, especially when there is so much fun to be had in the 1950s and beyond.Travis Kidd, the hip rocker vampire hunter featured in the second story, is as much fun as one could hope for . . . and more. I was also over-joyed to see a return of Raphael Albuquerque's art. His lush women and terrifying vampires are a bit part of the heart of the series for me and I never enjoy a story as much when he isn't drawing it (even through the other artists are usually quite good). I loved this story and I would have been happy to have it comprise the whole book.The final story, starring Calvin Poole (but now in vamp form) was enjoyable, but never really got full legs for me. I'm looking forward to future stories with Calvin.All in all, this is well worth the read. I missed Pearl (she only features slightly and then mainly to hint at future story developments), but am very much looking forward to reading the next volume. This is one of the most satisfying comics in years for me and the hardcover volume's high quality is worth the money.
