Kate DiCamillo is the beloved author of many books for young readers, including the Mercy Watson and Tales from Deckawoo Drive series. Her books Flora & Ulysses and The Tale of Despereaux both received Newbery Medals. A former National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, she lives in Minneapolis. We own all of the Mercy Watson books as well as all of the Tales From Deckawoo Drive series. I have two daughters, ages 3 and 6, who are both big fans of the books. While my 3-year-old really likes the Leroy Ninker book, I think the rest of us thought it not as good as the rest of the Mercy Watson series, and none of us were too impressed with the Francine Poulet option.This one is back in the game, big time. While my 3-year-old isn't quite as attached to this one (not as many animals in it), my 6-year-old loves it, and I think it might be the best of the Kate DiCamillo books so far. The descriptions and mental imagery is fantastic, the story is incredibly sweet, and the dialogue is amazing. I love how every character has his or her own voice, so reading this aloud is great. Stella gets to spend some time in the spotlight, and (at least in our house) has developed a cadence of speaking in breathless joined sentences, paragraphs of childish chattering that fits her perfectly. Baby Lincoln gets to get out on her own and discover herself, and we see some really touching moments about her and Eugenia as children.I love this book. This book is great for little siblings everywhere and big siblings everywhere and parents of siblings and anyone who's ever wanted to go on an adventure.

A book like this is a combination of words and illustrations. I would give the text of this book five stars but I must give the illustrations 4 stars because they are in black and white. A large part of the appeal of this collaboration between DiCamillo and Chris van Dusen are the large bright often humorous illustrations. However in this book, the illustrations are small and in black and white. They are still very good but they lack the impact of those found in other books of this series such as Mercy Watson (6 Book Series). So if you have not already read/acquired the books of the original series, get those first before you go on to this and other spin-off books. That said, I think that all the Mercy Watson books are worth getting because they are most entertaining for children and even the smaller black and white illustrations are not such a disappointment that I would advise not getting the "Tales From Deckawoo Drive" spin off series.

If u are used to the other mercy books, it wasnt clear to me at purchase that this one is a bit more advanced reading and not as visually pleasimg as the others at higher cost. The pictures are black and white. For these 2 reasons it didnt hold my childs fascination as much . Love the mercy series though

I have a seven year old daughter who is a reluctant reader and Kate DiCamillo's Mercy Watson series have FINALLY caught her attention. This story is a spin off of that series and it has been a hit, too. What makes these books so engaging is DiCamillo's voice, sense of humor, and strong characters. Super thankful for these books because it's the first time that I've found a title that my daughter is engaged by.

Baby Lincoln is a favorite character at our house and we are glad to have a book all about her! We laughed out loud at her Necessary Journey and have taken on the phrase for many of our own outings. Loved it.

Kate DiCamillo is truly the best children's author around. Mercy Watson books are the most imaginative and now we have other series to enjoy. Recommend for all children.

This one is my favorite of all the Deckawoo books. The story of sweet Baby finding her own self while still loving and valuing her family is beautiful. My daughter likes it too:)

Another nice addition to the Deckawoo drive series. This one really hits the theme of learning things about yourself, which is a great one for kids. My daughter and I loved learning Baby's real name!
