I taught myself to knit years ago because I could not crochet. I don't know why, but it just didn't work. This book was better than any videos because it basically puts things on pause at the important junctures. There aren't so many things on each page to where I get super distracted or anxious about what is coming. It also isn't so scattered that I have to worry about changing pages mid-stitch.It has a really clean format and I was really happy that it didn't have beautiful finished products at the beginning with all of the definitions. I've had too many failed efforts not to feel a little inadequate. I have successfully completed four rows of what may be a reasonably adequate pot holder. That is three and a half more than I've ever done before. Start small, you know? Anyway, if you want to start slow, and get distracted easily, or are a poster child for #nailedit ads, I'd try this book. Well, I did and I recommend.
I am getting back into crocheting after many years away so I am not brand new to it. I found this book a bit confusing and not well laid out but maybe it would work for a beginner that is starting from page 1 and working through it that way. Also the black and white pictures on the plain brown construction-paper like pages isn't easy to work with. The primary reason that I bought the book is that I really like the stitch pattern shown on the cover and was looking forward to trying that. Imagine my surprise when I got the book and that is not included. Nothing even resembling it. I wanted to return the book but due to a printer malfunction I was not able to print the label in time so that option is no longer available. I will be sticking with buying my craft books locally from now on so I know exactly what I am getting.
I learned the basics of crocheting as a small child and was super excited when my neighbor recently called together a crocheting party. It turned out my crooked scarf was no match for the baby hats and fingerless gloves of the others. I basically hid my work in embarrassment while pretending I knew what I was doing. This book, however, has given me confidence that at our next crocheting party I will be able to crochet something other than a crooked scarf!! The patterns in the back are beautiful, fun and detailed. At first glance they were confusing, but when I read the book in its entirety I could see that they are explained in great detail in the preceding chapters – complete with detailed drawings and links to short youtube videos showing how to compete each of the described task. I love the idea of having video links in an ebook! My favourite technique that I learned was how to make a pompom (probably because it was the easiest technique)! I have to say that there are a lot of details in the first few pages of this book that may seem at first to be superfluous (e.g., where certain types of crocheting hooks originated from), but after reading this I took out my crochet hook and sat down to tackle my favorite pattern with the help of the videos and instructions in this book. I’m no pro yet, but I look forward to trying every pattern given!! I would highly recommend to anyone with little to no experience who wants to learn to crochet!
As someone who has been "taught" to crochet many times, I always had to refer back to the tutorial or ask a lot of questions to continue. I feel like this book has changed that. Things were simplified in a manner that others had failed to convey to me in the past. I read it all in one sitting and practice each of the techniques and I can recall the execution without having to pull up the tutorial in the book. This is definitely the book you need to buy if you're looking to learn to crochet!
Got this as a gift for a friend without reading it myself first. There were some errors with the book that I was unhappy about. I crochet and she's learning, and she had to text me pictures to figure out what was going on with the book. She says she still likes the book but I think she's just being nice.
As a beginner who doesn't know what you don't know, you put a LOT of faith in your first beginner book. Not a smart thing to do with this one. I like that it links to videos...but you'd be better off just finding a good Youtube channel and watching those videos (which is ultimately how I learned..and asking some seasoned pros for help).-Some instructions are just not clear enough. Pictures are hard, I get it, so I'd use the video links. Also look up "working into a chain". I had to ask a pro about this, I was having trouble counting chains for stitches until I learned that working into a chain means hooking through TWO pieces of yarn (include the back bar).-After starting and getting halfway through the book, I came across the 'crocheting for left-handers' page while trying to find the glossary. This freaked me out making me think all that I'd accomplished (my first two projects) might be wrong somehow. If this page is going to be in the book, it should be in the intro or somewhere near the beginning. #1 says "Reverse the pattern so you're holding the crochet hook in your right hand." Um...if I'm holding the crochet hook in my right hand, that means I'm CROCHETING RIGHT HANDED. Which means I should NOT "reverse the pattern" but just crochet right-handed?!!! #2 suggests I should for some reason have trouble holding the hook. I'm a lefty, but I still have 4 fingers and a thumb. I don't understand this. I'm used to having to mirror image things in my head so that's what I've done and it's gone ok...so this page freaked me out for nothing and made me question what I was so proud to have finally learned.-The i-cord instructions I actually tried following before using the video. It says to start with "two long lengths of yarn and double them over." I guess that means I should have 4 lengths of yarn over the hook to start? Then make a slip knot with both. Hm. Ok. ...So I try to do these things and then eventually click the link for "crochet an i-cord". And lo and behold, every video I see on Youtube has you start with ch 3 and crocheting and dropping loops from the hook. NOTHING about two lengths of yarn doubled over. Maybe this method works too, but it's amazing someone would put a book together and write instructions and then link to a completely different video. Way to confuse your reader.-This inconsistent video linkage is a problem. I chose the fish cat toy as my first project. The link goes to video part 3 of 3 and I couldn't find either of the first two.-The fingerless gloves instructions starts out 23 (25, 27, 29). I was able to assume this has something to do with varying the sizing, not 'repeat everything in the parentheses' as the glossary of instructions about parentheses states. But it doesn't tell you how many inches compares to number of stitches to choose which size to go with. has a sc 1 ch 1 skip pattern. At the end it says "Rep this row until the piece is as long as you want it to be." As I said, I had trouble counting this skip/ch-1 sp pattern, so I never got more than 3 rows with it before giving up. But still- "as long as you want it to be.." how am I supposed to know how long I want it to be, when I don't know if I'm working from wrist to knuckles (23 seems about right for that) or around the circumference of the hand? It does NOT orient you to the project. And then it links to a video about crocheting fingerless mitten gloves that uses a consistent double crochet, a completely different pattern than the instructions, so that doesn't help orient you to your project. What I was hoping for in a beginner book would be not just orientation to stitches (including some of those imperative details that got left out about the back bar of the chain) would be that the first pattern would also include some English translation for the pattern. A book for beginners should assume you don't yet know how to read patterns, and recognize it can be a little tricky. At least one pattern with a "this means..." row by row translation to help get oriented and build confidence would be ideal, instead of making a first venture out and having to toggle back and forth between instructions page and glossary while holding a hook and yarn. The book makes too many assumptions and is NOT really meant for beginners, in my mind. I've since given up on this glove pattern and found another where I don't have to immediately know how to discern between chain and chain space to know where to put the hook.
