I honestly don't read a lot of graphic novels, but my friend recommended this to me and I loved it! It has a ton of fun women characters and the dialogue is great. It's fun, mysterious and adventurous, all about history, pirates, maps, puzzles, etc. Even a cute dog!
First of all, the illustrator of this comic, Naomi Franquiz, is absolutely WONDERFUL. Just had to get that out of the way. Second of all, everything about this comic is absolutely wonderful! I read Misfit City for the first time while waiting to pick a friend up from the airport and I almost missed my friend because I was so transfixed by Misfit City. It's feminist, it's funny, it's well-written, and most importantly, it's providing the sort of representation that we need in this day and age. I feel the need to write a review about this beautiful creation of a book because it is so rare in the comic world that we see these sorts of positive representations of women. I'd like to recommend this to everyone I know, and I'm excited to have a go-to birthday present for all my friends for the next year.
It’s always a pleasure to read something that aligns with your own childhood in many regards, yet bolstered to be far more clever and funny than the reality of those actual years. Feminism and friendship is a recurring theme in everything Smith does, yet Misfit City is poignant in the sense that I find myself reflecting upon it a lot. Without spoiling anything, this is the sort of creative endeavor that is great for remembering that there can be such sheer joy in creating something in the first place. Smith and Lustgarden’s combined intelligence, humor and grace are on full display in Misfit City. I am simultaneously nostalgic and inspired reading this comic book (actually the first comic book I’ve ever read!) and I think Smith and Lustgarden for putting me down a comic rabbit hole. I’ve since completed the entire Misfit City series and added many other comics to my collection. TLDR: buy this enjoyable comic and have an enjoyable time reading it!
I am all about adventure books featuring girls, so this is A++ for that. Good mix of characters with a diversity of personalities. I had a hard time keeping the names straight, though, and this is partly because the coloring/inking is so dark. For that reason, I wish there were a cast of characters list somewhere (or am I showing my age?). So yes. Cute.
God this is the comic book I/we need right now. It's just so deeply rad and inspiring all around, from the original, refreshing storyline to the incredible artwork. I've never wanted to be BFFs with a group of (fictional, bad*ss, hilarious) girls so bad in my LIFE. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy to get sucked into this foggy world of treasure maps, pirates, Death Grips references, and spooky spunky spirited adventure!!!
Cute and fun volume that felt a bit sedated. But I think this series is just getting going, so followup volumes will be stronger.
